Hyder Consulting Ltd
Bradtec and Hyder have a cooperation agreement for providing consultancy for accelerated decommissioning of UK facilities. Bradtec also assists Hyder in supplying its core services to the Nuclear Decommissioning market

ENS Ltd
Bradtec is a licensee of the EPRI DFD and DFDX Processes, and is collaborating with ENS to address opportunities for this technology. ENS owns portable equipment which was built by Bradtec. When the current technology transfer phase is complete ENS will operate under its own license arrangements.

Westinghouse
Westinghouse is a licensee of the EPRI DFD and DFDX Processes and has a technology support agreement with Bradtec.

Bradtec is a well established business promoting and patenting technologies to enable the early decommissioning of nuclear power and associated research facilities throughout the world.
Our Specialist Services
Graphite
There are over 200,000 tonnes of contaminated or irradiated graphite worldwide, of which nearly 80,000 tonnes are in the UK alone.
  • Chemical Decontamination
  • Graphite Disposition
  • Waste Minimisation
  • Metal Recycling
  • Ion Exchange/ Radionuclide Capture
  • Magnox Dissolution
  • Sodium and NaK Chemistry
  • Uranium and Fuel Chemistry

Graphite Management
Graphite management represents one of the key challenges for accelerating the decommissioning of UK nuclear power stations. Bradtec has been working for EPRI (on behalf of BNG, UKAEA, Japan Atomic Power, ENRESA, EdF & SOGIN) on dismantling and disposition of graphite moderators; including reporting on safely dismantling reactors and exploring disposal options (including burial, gasification & recycling). Further commissions have been placed on dust deflagration safety during dismantling.

Bradtec Patents
Bradtec’s principals are inventors or co-inventors of 15 nuclear technology patents including:

  • chemical and foam decontamination
  • graphite steam reforming
  • actinides removal from contaminated soil
  • magnetic ion exchange separation
  • removal of radioactive contamination from scale from the oil industry.

Several inventions are in commercial use; the best known is the LOMI decontamination process which has been in use since its first application at Winfrith SGHWR in 1980.

Research at the University of the West of England (UWE), Bristol, UK
Throughout its history Bradtec is proud to have been associated with the University of The West of England. This relationship provides Bradtec with space and facilities for receiving and handling small samples of radioactive material for R&D and test programmes.

Bradtec has conducted many R&D programmes in collaboration with UWE, most recently a PhD project to develop “magnetic molecules”, which are small nanoparticles having a magnetic core and a selective ion exchange function for removing radionuclides from solution. This work has been sponsored by EPRI.

Our Experience

Bradtec's principals have 30 years' experience in decommissioning technology. Products include the EPRI funded DFD (Decontamination for Decommissioning) and DFDX Processes.

The processes are used to clean components and coolant systems of light water reactors prior to decommissioning. Bradtec’s principals invented – and the company supports – development of “Magnox Dissolution” technology for treatment of Magnox fuel element debris and fuel hulls. Bradtec provides consultancy in the field of waste minimisation and recycling of materials for the nuclear industry.
